The Stuart Agency Client Dan Hoyt Wins Inaugural Dzanc Books Prize for Fiction
We are thrilled to announce that Dan Hoyt is the recipient of the first ever Dzanc Books Prize for Fiction. Hoyt’s debut novel, This Book Is Not For You, was chosen for the award which was created to recognize daring, original, and innovative writing. The prize comes with a $10K advance and publication by Dzanc Books in fall 2017!
This Book Is Not For You is a heartbreakingly-real novel about the chaos that ensues when one’s emotional, physical, and spiritual bottom is reached. It’s unusual structure—each chapter (some just a sentence long) is labeled Chapter 1, and Neptune, its belligerent, Caulfieldesque, first-person narrator, directly addresses the reader throughout—doesn’t distract but serves to ground the reader in Neptune’s tortured psychology. The effect is reminiscent of darkly comic and alcohol-soaked works like Lucky Jim by Kinglsey Amis and The Ginger Man by J.P Donleavy.
Daniel A. Hoyt (Dan) is an associate professor at Kansas State University. His short-story collection, Then We Saw the Flames, won the 2008 Juniper Prize for Fiction and was published by the University of Massachusetts Press (2009). Dan’s creative work has also appeared in The Kenyon Review, Indiana Review, Quarterly West, Meridian, Ecotone, and other literary magazines. From 2004-2010, Dan taught at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and in 2009, he won an Individual Excellence Award in fiction from the Ohio Arts Council. In the 1990s, Dan worked as a journalist at newspapers in Missouri, Wisconsin, and New York. He cheers — simultaneously and without regret — for the Missouri Tigers, the Kansas Jayhawks, and the Kansas State Wildcats. Dan lives in Manhattan, Kansas, with his wife, Sarah, and newly adopted son.
